2026-08-20 Python Steering Council meeting summary

  • We continued to discuss the JIT and the current state of PEP 836 - JIT Go Brrr: The Path to a Supported JIT Compiler for CPython. The SC has not yet been asked to pronounce on the PEP, so this is continued discussion after the Steering Council Office Hours (SCOH) session. We will draft our public response and continue to iterate on it.
  • We discussed our follow up to Seth and Stan about the PSRT membership process, and will follow up with them with our recommendations.
  • We approve adding RISC-V to PEP 11’s Tier 3 support.
  • We discussed and rejected Brett’s SC request to drop the buildbot requirement when CI is run for a Tier 1 supported platform. Instead, we recommend adding buildbot support for Tier 1 supported platforms in addition to CI, since CI and buildbot testing serve different purposes.
  • Next week’s agenda:
    • Who owns virtualenvs PEPs, CPython or Packaging?
    • Commit bit issue for inactive core devs.
