Enable GitHub Sponsors on Python org

I think it would be great if we enable GitHub sponsorships for Python, or at very least under CPython repo.

We can link the sponsorship to The PSF’s Donation page: https://www.python.org/psf/donations/

To enable Sponsors button on GitHub:

  1. Go to the repository’s settings. Under Features heading, check the “Sponsorships” box (more details https://help.github.com/en/articles/displaying-a-sponsor-button-in-your-repository)

  2. Create FUNDING.yml file with the following content:

custom: https://www.python.org/psf/donations/

example: https://github.com/python/cpython/pull/13829

It can also be created under https://github.com/python/.github

Do you have an example of how it is rendered?

Is it a way to redirect people to https://www.python.org/psf/donations/?

Example from astropy https://github.com/astropy/astropy
There is sponsor button on top, and if you click on it, there’s link to donate to astropy.

With the funding.yml file, we can configure it to go to https://www.python.org/psf/donations/

Oh I see. That looks like a nice addition. +1 for me

I’m planning to bring it up with the council if/when we start having a way to make donations directly to Python’s maintenance.
