[This year, EuroPython is hosting online sprints July 25-26](https://ep2020.europython.eu/events/sprints/) and [sprint-only tickets are free](https://ep2020.europython.eu/registration/buy-tickets/). I currently have no plans for those days.

Anyone want to participate in a packaging sprint? We could help people learn to package their own stuff, shake out bugs in the new pip (a new release will probably be out by then), have new people interview old-timers and take notes to start architecture docs, follow up on [metadata strictness prerequisites](https://github.com/pypa/packaging-problems/issues/264#issuecomment-618123871)…

If at least three other people volunteer to participate (either to help newcomers or to do some in-depth collaboration with other experts), I’ll be the coordinator for a EuroPython sprint.

I’m down to hack on bandersnatch, warehouse or black. Might even try something new.

Will keep a lookout on the event wiki.

My calendar’s open then too – I’d like to work on the “self-contained wheel(-only) installer outside of pip” idea that gets kicked around (obviously if anyone else is interested as well that makes it even more interesting 🙂 )

But also happy to help newcomers.

I am also free. PyCon Taiwan (which I’m involved with) has been exploring online sprint and community space options, so I’m also very keen to learn from the experience as well. The biggest problem for me (as usual with this kind of events) is the timezone, however. The EuroPython page doesn’t seem to specify anything about time of days, so it’d be nice to have some clarification on that—and if the event is run around-the-clock, what time people actually expect to be available.

The wheel installer mentioned above sounds like a very good topic to me. There has been [some initial work available](https://github.com/pradyunsg/installer/) and I can already think of a few concrete things to work on if people are interested. But I’m also interested in other roles as well, they’d be invaluable experience for PyCon Taiwan 🙂

Thanks for pointing it out, I’ll register asap

Great! Thanks for stepping up! I’ve [created the sprint wiki page](https://wiki.python.org/moin/EuroPython2020/PackagingSprint) and [listed it in the EuroPython sprints](https://wiki.python.org/moin/EuroPython2020/Sprints). If you want to edit that page, [create a wiki account](https://wiki.python.org/moin/FrontPage#use) and go ahead. Sometime in the next 7 weeks I’ll gather some good bugs for first-timers and link them there – feel free to get ahead of me in doing that.

Hi! I would like to participate to a Sprint this year for the first time and the Packaging Sprint is the one that interest me most.

What should I do to find on what components I should work on? For example there is some “R: deferred until PR” issues that I think could work on for pip. Should I just plan to work on them next saturday?

Hi! Glad you can join us @remilapeyre! In order to get started preparing to participate, I suggest you start by skimming [tutorials/resources here (whatever covers material you don’t know yet)](https://wiki.python.org/moin/EuroPython2020/PackagingSprint#Tutorials.2Fresources). If you’re interested in working on pip specifically, go ahead and [get your development environment set up](https://pip.pypa.io/en/latest/development/getting-started/), if you have not already.

I see [several issues where we’d like new tests or testing improvements](https://github.com/pypa/pip/issues?q=is%3Aopen+is%3Aissue+label%3A%22C%3A+tests%22) – perhaps you could start looking at those?

Do we have a clear idea of who is at the conference and running these sprints? I had a few people ask me yesterday about them, and other than the dedicated Discord channel, I was not sure where to send them.

@steve.dower Good question. I’m at the conference but I’m in New York City, so I won’t be able to present the [two-minute intro](https://ep2020.europython.eu/events/sprints/#Sprint-Opening-Session) and there will be a few hours at the start of Saturday & Sunday where I won’t be in the sprint room in Discord. @cooperlees@Julian @uranusjr and @fbidu are participating; I believe Cooper, Tzu-ping, and Julian are best-placed to help newcomers along with me.

Please go ahead and send them to the dedicated Discord channel.

@Julian @cooperlees I’d appreciate if you could join the Discord, join the channel for the packaging sprint, and note in there what you’ll be working on, and link to some “here’s how to get started” guides (on bandersnatch, wheel, pipenv, anything else) and good-for-first-timers issues.
