On behalf of the Steering Council, I’m happy to accept PEP 687 (Isolating modules in the standard library). It’s clear to us the (current and potential) benefits outweigh the code churn and (minor) performance impact. We want to apply those benefits to all of the standard library extension modules.
(Just to be clear to anyone particularly eager to convert more of the standard library, since it’s not explicitly called out in the PEP: making these changes should be considered a feature change, not a bugfix, and so it is not suitable for backports to previous Python versions.)
