Something that seems to have been missed in the thread you’re linking now: if someone tries to use extras to define dependencies for testing, those will also end up in wheel metadata, not just sdists - while the wheel is unlikely to include the actual tests.

Huh? What are you saying this has been “missed” on the basis of?

That’s the whole premise of the proposal there (and here). From the 2nd sentence of the 1st post of the thread I linked to:

These are development only “dependencies” of a package, that aren’t supposed to be exposed to end-users as extras
