The trick with your approach is you have to manually add the support you want use from a workflow tool as it adds support for new capabilities compared to the JSON-RPC approach or some other approach where the tool communicates out what it supports and so usage is automatic.

I’m not sure which approach people prefer: automatic/dynamic detection of new features or a more explicit opt-in (or support both approaches).

The dichotomy could potentially be eliminated by having a discover hook (however spelled) in the static configuration. An explicit hook declaration would take precedence over the discovery, allowing projects to choose between:

• delegate everything to the workflow manager (presumably the most common approach)
• delegate by default, with selective overrides for some operations
• explicit hooks only, no default delegation (for cases where the project is combining multiple separate tools rather than actually using a workflow manager)
