Hi everyone!

I’m starting to work on revitalizing the German translation for the official Python documentation.

Since the previous translation effort was done quite a while ago and the old repository was inactive, I am beginning with a fresh setup in my fork at [https://github.com/sba72/python-docs-de](https://github.com/sba72/python-docs-de) to ensure all terms and structures align with current CPython standards.

If anyone is interested in contributing, reviewing, or discussing terminology, feel free to join in! I’m also active in the #translations channel on the official Python Discord.

Looking forward to collaborating with the community!

Hi Swen, I’m also interested in a German Python translation! What have you created so far, and how can I help? Regards, Jyst!

Hi Jyst, you are very welcome!

You can find the repository in my account (see link above). To contribute, please create a fork of this repository, push your changes to your fork, and then open a pull request.

I am working on version 3.14. You can recognize the translated `.po` files by their timestamps: all newer ones have been translated by me, while the rest are still untranslated. My main focus is on the `/tutorial` first, followed by `/installation`. Later, we will need the `/library`.

Currently, I work on `/tutorial/controlflow.po` and `/library.string.po`.

Feel free to start with whatever you like—just send me a quick note beforehand to avoid double work.

Please submit pull requests only for fully translated `.po` files, and make sure to follow the style guides and guidelines from the Python organization. Also, for a consistent German translation, we are using the informal “du” instead of “Sie”.

Let me know if you have any questions or ideas!

Welcome aboard! Let’s get started on the German translation! Regards, Swen!

Wonderful! For a first test, I try to translate “installing/index.po” and send a pull request to you. If it fit your expectations, perfect! If not please give me hints to improve my translation!

**Hi everyone,**

A quick update on the progress of the German documentation translation:

Together with a powerful contributors, Jyst, we have made substantial progress on translating the **core** documentation set for the language German. We have now reached **over 93% coverage** for the core files (including the tutorial, built-in standard types, language reference, and foundational components) and are finalizing the remaining strings to reach 100% and after that more as these core translations.

The current work and translated `.po` files are consolidated in our working branch:

- **Repository:** `[`[https://github.com/sba72/python-docs-de](https://github.com/sba72/python-docs-de)`](Branch 3.14)`

With the core translation nearing full completion, we would like to inquire about the next steps outlined in **PEP 545** :

1. Setting up / linking the official repository under `python/python-docs-de`.
2. Establishing the platform integration (Transifex / translation workflow synchronization) and confirm my request for joining the Transifex translation-project for German.
3. Integrating the German language track into the automated documentation build pipeline for `docs.python.org/de/`.

We would appreciate guidance from the translation coordinators on how best to proceed with the official onboarding, also with the goal to reach more contributors for the language German and stabilize the German translation team in future.

Best regards,
Swen

Hi Swen,

Thanks for the update. I’d just like to clarify that PEP 545 is a little outdated, and in parts obsolete. The [Devguide](https://devguide.python.org/documentation/translations/translating/#translating) documents the current, up to date process.

I accepted you on Transifex and added you as coordinator there, apologies it was missed before. @JystBreisgau please let me know you username and I can add you as a coordinator as well. You’ll have to upload all your translations there, as I see in your repository it pulled from Transifex reverting a lot of your work.

We can look into integrating it into docsbuild-scripts once the required articles are complete.

Thanks Stan!

I’ve resolved the sync issue in my repository.

The core requirements from the Devguide (`tutorial/*`, `library/functions.po`, `bugs.po`, etc.) are now fully translated and verified.

Please let us know once you can proceed with moving/setting up the repository under the `python` org and integrating it into `docsbuild-scripts`.

I’m not sure that’s the case, I think you might have missed something. The translation dasboard reports the [completion of the core resources as 94.5%](https://translations.python.org/#de), and [another check](https://github.com/python-docs-translations/switcher-progress/actions/runs/32376803103/job/96450085635) also shows incomplete translation.

The core resources have to be complete before we can publish the translation.

Please note that in dashboard we check the process against 3.15 which is in beta, whereas the translation targets 3.14.

Hello Swen and Jyst,

Thank you, I have confirmed that the requirements [are met](https://translations.python.org/#de).

We can either move your existing repository to `python` (if that’s what you’d like to do, please transfer it to me on GitHub), or I can create a blank one, where you can import your existing work. Please let me know what you’d like to do.

Hi Stan, I’m glad to hear that. An important step for the German translation, thx!

I’would prefer the second option, a new (fresh) repo and we will import our existing work into.
The current repo is itself a fork of yours.
Currently, we are a small community for DE, will be able to fork the new, official repository in the future. Happy to push our existing 3.14 and 3.15 branches over as soon as the new repo is ready.

Great, I’ve set up [`python/python-docs-de`](https://github.com/python/python-docs-de) and invited you and Jyst, you should be good to go now. Feel free to ping me if you run into any issues.

Once you set up the repository, please continue with [opening a PR in `docsbuild-scripts`](https://devguide.python.org/documentation/translations/coordinating/#adding-to-the-language-switcher).
