Welcoming the Supporting Developer in Residence

Hello there!
When we were hiring for the Deputy Developer in Residence role sponsored by Bloomberg, we received an unexpected number of great applications. Ultimately, after an extensive interview process, the Steering Council and I chose Petr Viktorin. He’s starting in January, we can’t wait!

While we are very happy to have Petr on board, the decision was doubly hard because choosing him meant rejecting Serhiy Storchaka, one of the most prolific contributors to Python in recent years. Long story short, thanks to the Python Software Foundation’s direct funding, we were able to hire Serhiy as well! He’s starting today.

We are calling the role the Supporting Developer in Residence to make it clear the funding level here isn’t as high as in the Deputy case. Please contact us if your organization can help sponsor Serhiy to bump him to the Deputy salary. Serhiy sure deserves it!

In the meantime, please join me in welcoming Serhiy as the newest member of our little Dev-in-Rez team! His official starting date is today, but in truth, he’s been with us for years now

Wonderful news to hear that @storchaka is beginning today. Serhiy has contributed so much to Python’s development and shared his knowledge thoughtfully with so many developers.

Congrats to Serhiy, Petr, and Lukasz. :tada:
