2026-03-19 Python Steerin Council Meeting Summary

  • We held office hours with Peter Bierma to discuss PEP 788 (Protecting the C API from Interpreter Finalization). We shared feedback on simplifying the PEP’s scope and reducing complexity: in particular, the PEP currently attempts to address too many concerns at once. Discussion focused on different aspects of the PEP and how to approach it going forward. This includes the future usage from binding-generation tools (such as PyBind11), the potential deprecation of PyGilState_Ensure, subinterpreter support…etc
  • We discussed PEP 803 (“abi3t”: Stable ABI for Free-Threaded Builds), including two approaches to naming and loading conventions for the stable ABI in free-threaded builds. We will continue this discussion next week.
  • We discussed travel and reimbursement logistics for upcoming conferences including EuroPython and PyCon US. We will follow up with PSF accounting on EuroPython specifics.
