The 2026 Python Type System and Tooling Survey is out!

Take the survey here: Python Type System and Tooling Survey 2026 (or scan the QR code attached at the end).

I also want to say a huge thank-you to the folks who commented on our earlier post with feedback on the draft survey.

The survey will be open for about a month. Stay tuned for another post with the survey results in a few weeks after closing!

This survey was developed with support from the Pyrefly team at Meta, the PyCharm team at JetBrains, the Python team at Microsoft, the ty team at Astral, and the community contributors on this forum.

Just a friendly reminder that the survey will close in a week. If you have been meaning to fill it out, now’s a great time. Thanks to everyone who already has! :folded_hands:

Thanks all who filled out the survey! We have now closed the survey for responses and are working on reviewing the data, so keep a look out for another post on that in the near future.

In the meantime we’d like to share some preliminary results.

  • 70% of those who always use type hints rely on Python Typing docs for help, showing strong documentation dependence among frequent users.
  • 40.2% of those with 0-2 years type hint experience reported using type hints significantly more than a year ago, a 29.7 percentage point gap over the most experienced group.
