Can we rename "committer" to "core developer"?

I think the only place we use “committer” right now is https://hg.python.org/tracker/python-dev/file/tip/html/issue.item.html#l365 Is there a reason to use “committer” now or can we change it back to “core developer”?

(Let me know if you want me to change https://hg.python.org/tracker/python-dev/file/tip/html/issue.item.html#l365 to “core developer”.)

Thank you.

The mailing list was called python-committers. In what way do you think is “core developer” better?

I don’t know which one is better, but it seems to me that “core developer” is more used in the Python community. We even have a section called How to Become a Core Developer in the devguide

I also would prefer “core developer”. I think the “category” can stay as committer, but our “title” could be “CPython core developer” instead of “CPython committer”. Thanks.

Cool. That’s an easy change. But I haven’t seen an answer here yet, why do you think it’s a better term?

I never considered any of those two better or worse and “committer” is shorter which helps in the context of a title that is attached to your user name on a website like this.

I’m curious what I’m missing.

Aha! The perfect excuse to use the poll functionality for real :grinning:

What do people prefer?

  • CPython core developer
  • CPython committer

The poll misspelled “committer” so maybe that’s a good reason right there.

Ups!

The title next to everyone’s name is also misspelled.

Fixed. In fact, double fixed.
