You can read my full nomination statement on python.org, but by suggestion of the election administrators I’ve opened this topic here for folks to ask about my candidacy.
With the formation of the Packaging Python Council (PPC) today to vote in this election you need to be a PSF voting member. This requires one of the 3 paths documented here Become a Member of the PSF | Python Software Foundation. Going ahead how do you think the PSF board and the PPC should work together? Do you think the 3 required paths sufficient to make sure no one feels excluded from the packaging story? If not, how would you improve on it? Thanks and best of luck!
Beyond the bootstrapping, election support, and governance backstopping spelled out in PEP 772, the future should be informed by the priorities and needs of the PPC and I suspect it will change over time. At a high level most of the work that the PPC and PSF Board are best suited to collaborate on will be around resources, fundraising, and communication.
A potential gap that I see in the current paths is that Contributing Membership is available to people volunteering on projects that advance the PSF’s mission. It is obvious that any contributor to open-source projects in the Python packaging ecosystem advances the PSF’s mission, however many such contributors do so as part of their paid labor. Recognition of these contributors and their stake in Python packaging is important, and if those being paid to work on Python packaging feel excluded by financial cost of the PSF’s Supporting Membership (at full $99 or $25 sliding scale) that should be addressed.
