The Packaging Platypus

At PyCon this year @voidspace remarked that the platypus would be a good animal mascot for Python packaging. This was so obviously true that a few of us got together to sponsor the creation of some artwork. Presenting the Packaging Platypus.

I really hope you like it. If you like it, see its website at https://monotreme.club. We have stickers.

If you need this offline monotreme.club is available as a progressive web application. It can be saved to a home screen or desktop and it will load without a connection. You can color the platypus yourself at https://monotreme.club/#/color , and you can share the URL to share your color scheme.

I see the SSL certificate here has expired. Could someone look into this?

Looks fixed now!

Used in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B4GQCBBsuNU and in lots of tweets about the pip work.

@dholth - Could you explain the different elements in the image? I’m curious. Some of them are obvious to me, and some of them not.

  • The platypus is the new packaging mascot.
  • The cardboard box is a reference to packaging.
  • The snake is a reference to Python.
  • The cheese wheel is both a reference to PyPI, a.k.a The Cheese Shop, as well as to the .whl format.
  • The spotted egg (I think?) is a reference to the .egg format.

The references that I’m not getting are:

  • The bird.
  • The ball of yarn (?).
  • The orange half.

Twine, I assume.

With apologies to Poetry, and any other packaging tools that we weren’t able to represent.

From the “Platypus Facts” on the page:
“Can incapacitate a human with its venom”
Haha, so fitting as Python Packaging has the ability to practically incapacitate a newcomer (or even an experienced developer sometimes) :))

So the ball of yarn is twine, the orange half is pip, what is the bird?

Flit I suppose.

We had the packaging pig around 2010-2012, then recently a discussion about drawing the elephant, then this new idea of a platypus with accessories. I miss the pig :pig:

IIRC the pig was eaten. Hope it was delicious!
