Vote to promote Nathan Goldbaum

I would like to nominate Nathan Goldbaum (@ngoldbaum here and on GitHub) to become a core developer.

Nathan has done a truly monumental amount of work in the community to aid in the adoption of free-threaded Python, such as maintaining pytest-run-parallel and the Python Free-Threading Guide. On top of this, he has contributed to free-threading porting efforts directly for dozens of projects, such as NumPy and PyO3, both of which he is now a maintainer on. I believe Nathan’s experience working on these efforts provides a unique community-grounded perspective which would be a valuable addition to the team.

Nathan has also been active on the project directly, being involved in 90 issues, and 64 PRs. He has co-authored PEP 803, adding a stable ABI for free-threaded builds, and has caught and fixed several bugs in the implementation thereof, e.g. #149900. He has also reviewed several other major PRs such as the implementation of PEP 820, the PySlot API.

Finally, Nathan is applying his experience with NumPy and other scientific Python projects as part of exploring improvements to the buffer protocol. These improvements include expressing custom data types and mutability XOR sharing semantics, which he presented on at the language summit this year.

Nathan has been a pleasure to work with, and I am sure he will make a great addition to the core developer team.

Huge +1 from me. I’ve had nothing but positive interactions with Nathan, and his work on contributing free-threading support to the ecosystem is one of the primary reasons that the project is progressing so quickly.

Huge +1 from me. Nathan is delightful to work with. He also has a depth of knowledge about Scientific Python and HPC.
