When are mailing list messages sent?

Out of curiosity, at what point is the “snapshot” of a message taken to send to mailing list participants? Is it immediately when a message is sent, or after the initial 5 minute edit window?

I suspect it’s the latter, since there is a 10 minute delay between
when posts are made and when the headers indicate they’re received
by the local MTA for the Discourse server on their way to my own
mailserver. I’ve always assumed this was done in order to
incorporate edits made shortly after the post is initially saved.

Yup, its a 10 minute delay by default (though it is configurable by admins). Edits within that window should be reflected in the mailed out messages, whereas later ones will not (and I’ve advised users accordingly when where appropriate, to be considerate to mailing list readers, and try to keep that in mind myself now).
