When to branch off a topic and start a new one?

Continuing the discussion from How do you find Discourse so far?:

I think because Discourse makes it fairly easy to fork a topic, I think we might end up doing it more proactively than we used to by email since there’s less ceremony for it. It also helps that splitting a topic after it has accidentally gone off-topic is rather easy for an admin that will also drive people to be more proactive to keep topics on-point.

But I’m not sure. It’s going to take either us discussing how we want to handle things or just naturally reaching some agreement on thresholds (hence this new topic :grin:).
