Hi everyone,
Following the discussion at the Cambridge sprint and the thread on Discourse and this official request, the Steering Council is opening this poll to gather consensus on alternating the Language Summit location.
Background
Since 2009, the Python Language Summit has been held at PyCon US (except for 2010-2011 when it was at EuroPython). Meanwhile, the core dev sprint has alternated between the US and Europe since 2019.
The proposal is to alternate the Language Summit between PyCon US and EuroPython starting in 2026, with EuroPython hosting the first alternating summit.
Rationale
- Not all core developers can travel to the US every year due to visa issues, personal circumstances, or the current political climate
- Python’s mission emphasises supporting a diverse and international community
- EuroPython already offers free tickets to core developers and has expressed willingness to host
- The core dev sprint already alternates successfully
Considerations
- Travel grants from the CPython core development budget would need to be determined (likely covering one event per year)
- Both PyCon US and EuroPython provide free tickets to core developers
- The timing could complement the existing sprint alternation pattern
Poll
Please vote on the following options:
- No - Keep the Language Summit at PyCon US every year
- Yes - Alternate the Language Summit between PyCon US and EuroPython
- Yes, if the alternation is opposite to the core dev sprint - Alternate the summit, ensuring that each year has one event in the US and one in Europe (e.g., if the sprint is in North America, the summit would be in Europe that year)
The poll will remain open fo 2 weeks.
Thank you very much!
Pablo (on behalf of the Steering Council)
