Signups (finally) open for the Python Packaging Summit 2023!

Hello everyone! After several delays waiting on the various logistics details, @pradyunsg , @FFY00 , and I are excited to announce that registration and topic proposals for the Python Packaging Summit at PyCon US 2023 are officially open! As in previous years, the summit will be an opportunity to have a hands-on, in-person discussion of the key packaging issues facing the Python community, with the topics to be decided by all of you.

When and where

This year, instead of one monolithic four-hour block, it’ll be split into two shorter two-hour sessions—one near the beginning and one near the end of the conference, to both minimize conflicts with other events and give participants a break to think about the initial topics discussed and reconvene with fresh minds and insight. The first session will be Friday, April 21 from 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM, and the second will be Sunday, April 23 from 1:00 - 3:00 PM. Both will be held in room 251AB at the Salt Palace Convention center.

Register to attend

Are you involved in Python packaging in some capacity, have a unique perspective to share and ready to participate in intense discussions helping continue to hash out the present and future of Python packaging? If so, you’re a great canidate to attend!

Make sure to apply on our registration form, which closes Saturday April 1, 2023 AoE. You should receive an email confirming whether you were selected to attend by Wednesday April 5.

Propose a topic

Do you have a particular topic in mind you want to share or discuss? Great! Keep in mind that time allows for a limited number of topics, and we’ll need to select those that pose the broadest interest from and applicability to the community and would benefit most from a hands-on, interactive discussion. Submitting multiple topics is allowed (and encouraged, within reason), and you don’t have to be selected to attend to have your topic discussed.

You can submit your topic on our topic proposal form, which closes Monday April 10, 2023 AoE. We’ll email out and publish a final schedule shortly thereafter, prior to the opening of the conference. We’re looking forward to hearing your ideas!

Yeah, unfortunately a lot of the difficulty and delay planning this was finding timeslot(s) with the minimum of likely conflicts for anyone, and in which most people would likely be there; we ended up going back and forth on that a lot before finally locking something down. In hindsight, with how long it took it probably would have been a good idea to just put out a poll first to gauge people’s preferences and availability…something to keep in mind for next year.
